Business models - including those of SMEs - are becoming increasingly complex and international.

Increased demands on reporting and transparency mean that the management of family businesses and SMEs are also managing their companies on the basis of increasingly sophisticated controlling instruments and reporting on this basis.

Professional and effective controlling

There are many reasons for family businesses in particular to rely on professional and effective controlling: Advisory boards that are installed in the course of company succession require a reliable basis for advising and monitoring the management. In addition, the founding generation that has left the company operationally often wants to evaluate the decisions or proposed decisions of the successor generation from their own perspective. However, controlling is also necessary in order to be able to fulfil the information requirements of banks for larger commitments promptly and reliably and to be able to assess the monitoring of restructuring success in the context of restructuring.

The reliability of the underlying data from financial accounting and planning data is an indispensable prerequisite for the successful development of systematic and reliable controlling with target/actual comparisons (or plan/actual comparisons) and KPI-supported corporate management.

The following controlling instruments are particularly suitable for medium-sized companies:

  • Monthly management analysis (BWA) taking into account monthly accrual postings (e.g. depreciation on fixed assets, adjustments to provision requirements)
  • The monthly BWA on the earnings situation contains: a monthly plan/actual comparison, a year-to-date plan/actual comparison for the reporting month and a year-to-date plan/actual comparison for the entire reporting year
  • The information from the actual financial accounting can be usefully supplemented with data from subledgers
  • Key figure systems for internal and external comparison and as a prerequisite for utilising bank financing
  • Against the background of increasing reporting obligations, it is advisable to embed these controlling instruments in regular company reporting that is individually structured for a specific target group.
